What is Yoga?

Yoga isn’t just a form of movement or exercise.

Yoga means ‘union’; a collective name for uniting the mind, body and spirit, with the the ultimate aim of quietening the mind.

Your yoga practice will vary depending on the type of class and intention, but typically a yoga class at Lunà Movements’s studio inn Derby will incorporate the practice of ‘asanas’ (yoga postures) and ‘pranayama’ (breathwork to cleanse and strengthen the mind and body to support the release of toxins from the body).

Off the matt, yoga is a way of life, a discovery of the self; we can explore how we connect with ourselves and the outside world with the aim to reduce harm to others and to one self.

Yoga allows us to be mindful to explore where and how we carry this weight + tension and to choose whether to release and let go.

Types of Yoga

Yoga has evolved over the years with a polarity of styles and energy levels. Take a look at what your body is needing from you to restore balance.

Vinyasa

A series of poses connected by the breath. The breath acts as the connection between the mind, body and your emotions as you flow from one pose to the next. The variations in poses, flow and purpose of the class means that each class offers something new.

Yoga barre

A fusion of ballet inspired move with yoga and Pilates to create a workout that tones the muscles. It combines the strengthening and conditioning of ballet, with the mindfulness and flexibility of yoga.

Yin

A style of yoga which explores the practice of internal quieting and cleansing, as well as exercising the Yin tissues. As the elasticity of our connective tissue diminishes with physical activity and aging, Yin is essential for injury prevention and joint health. Yin Yoga and the philosophy of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) deeply intertwine, as the long-held, passive postures stimulate the body's meridian system (the energetic pathways for the body’s life force or Qi). The fascia and connective tissues are targeted helping to release blockages and balance organ systems encouraging energetic harmony.

Restorative

A style of yoga which focusses on encouraging deep relaxation. Using props such as bolsters, blankets and blocks, we invite the body to find the support it needs for the muscles and connective tissues to become passive. The goal of restorative yoga is to encourage the physical body, the nervous system, and the mind to feel so safe, that the muscles can be encouraged to relax and promote stillness, calming the nervous system rather than building strength or flexibility.

Before joining a a yoga class or session in Derby, it’s natural to have a few questions. Do I need to have done yoga before?

Not at all. Our yoga classes are suitable for beginners and those returning to movement, as well as people with more experience. Options are always offered, and you’re encouraged to move at your own pace.

No, flexibility is not a requirement. Yoga helps you gently explore movement and mobility over time, but it’s about awareness and connection as your explores both stillness, movement and the transition, not how far you can stretch.

The majority of our classes do assume an ability to stand and move between seated and standing. Otherwise, our classes are adaptable for different bodies and mobility levels. Movements can be practised seated, standing, or supported. But if you are limited to seated, please get in touch so that we can prepare seating and adaptations in advance. Please always make use of your Health Questionairre on booking to inform your teacher if you have any injuries or concerns so they can offer appropriate options.

It is worth noting also, that with more awareness of community needs we hope to offer more specialised classes on to the timetable in time.

Darley Abbey Scouts Hall – Please bring your own mats. If you are trying Yoga for the first time, please contact us at hello@luna-movements.com in advance of your class so that we can bring along a spare for you.

Absolutely. Rest is always welcome and respected. You’re encouraged to listen to your body and pause whenever you need.

Anything comfortable that allows you to move and breathe easily. There’s no specific dress code. If wearing socks, please wear socks with grips to support stability of movement on your mat.

I believe every human should have access to the transformative benefits of movement and expression; tools that, in my view, should be taught from our earliest years.

Benefits of Yoga

At Lunà Movements, yoga is an invitation to slow down, tune in, and reconnect – to your body, your breath, and your inner energy. Our approach is informed by the chakra system, recognising that wellbeing is not just physical, but emotional, mental and energetic, too.

Whether you’re new to movement, returning after time away, or feeling overwhelmed by the demands of daily life, yoga meets you exactly where you are.

Supporting the Nervous System & Sense of Safety

Yoga offers space to pause in a fast-moving world. Through grounding postures, breath awareness, and mindful pacing, our classes support the lower chakras, helping to cultivate feelings of safety, stability, and calm.

This can be especially supportive for those experiencing stress, fatigue, or nervous system overwhelm.

Strength, Mobility & Grounded Movement

Yoga builds functional strength, balance, and mobility in ways that are adaptable for all bodies and mobility levels. Practices that emphasise connection to the ground and steady movement help strengthen the body while fostering confidence, trust, and physical ease.

Movements can be practised standing, seated, or supported, allowing everyone to move in a way that feels safe and sustainable (but to help our teachers be more prepared, please get in contact if mobility is restricted to seated only).

Reconnecting to Sensation & Body Awareness

By encouraging awareness of breath, sensation, and subtle energy, yoga supports the central chakras associated with creativity, confidence, and personal power.

This helps cultivate a deeper relationship with your body, not as something to control or push, but as something to listen to and respond to with care.

Inclusive, Accessible & Choice-Led Practice

Our yoga classes are intentionally designed to be welcoming and inclusive. A range of options are always offered, with clear permission to rest, pause, or adapt movements as needed. Props such as blocks, bolsters, chairs, blankets, and supports are actively encouraged, helping you feel held and supported throughout the practice.

There is no expectation to move in a particular way. Rest is honoured as an essential part of the practice, and choice is central, empowering you to work with your body and energy on any given day.

Emotional Balance, Breath & Expression

Through breath-led movement and moments of stillness, yoga supports the heart and throat centres, encouraging emotional balance, self-expression, and presence. Many people leave class feeling lighter, clearer, and more connected — both internally and with the world around them.

Integration, Rest & Inner Awareness

Gentle practices and closing rest support the upper chakras, encouraging clarity, intuition, and a sense of integration. These moments invite reflection, nervous system regulation, and a feeling of wholeness, helping you leave feeling grounded yet uplifted.

A Foundation Within Holistic Movement

Within our wider offering of yoga, Pilates, and dance-inspired movement, yoga acts as an energetic and physical foundation, balancing strength with softness, effort with ease, and movement with meaning. It supports a sustainable, long-term relationship with both body and energy.

At Lunà Movements, yoga isn’t about flexibility, performance, or perfection.
It’s about balance, accessibility, and energetic awareness, supporting you to feel more connected, supported, and at home in your body.
